About this Event
Come out and support our first prostate cancer awareness walk during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month on September 25 from 8 am to 3pm at the American Legion Post 197 on 2179 Benedict Road.
“We want to educate men on the importance of early detection and the value gained from being open to talking about their experiences with their mates and family members. This is a silent killer. The disparities are too wide to ignore and we are asking the community to come out to support each other and raise awareness, says Lynn Turpin, UF Health Citizen Scientist and local Journalist.
Duval has the 4th largest population of African Americans in the state of Florida and Florida Heath Charts Statistics note that Blacks males are 60% more likely to die from cancer than any other group.
The goal of Protalks, which stand for ProTalks: Prostate, Research, Outreach/Opinions/Opportunities, is to increase knowledge of prostate cancer with African American men ages 18 - 100 and the broader community most impacted by prostate cancer. ProTalks (a spin on TedTalks) centers on prostate cancer awareness and prevention via print/social/radio media outlets, online webinars, and seminars.
ProTalks is a communitybased forum designed to share accurate and relevant information primarily for audiences of diverse demographics of African American men, youth and caregivers. ProTalks is structured to create dialogue and engagement while creating an environment of trust to chip away at these barriers and stigmas.
The ProTalks is a program of the UF CaRE2 Health Equity Center and the Citizen Scientists.
Businesses interested in signing up for the walk can contact Lynn Jones-Turpin at [email protected] or call or text at 904-534-6628.
