About this Event
Join us and Elijah Shiffer for a guided walk at Prospect Park, taking some time to observe the birds found there during winter.
The spring and fall migrations get more attention, but winter is still an exciting time for birdwatching in New York City. Prospect Park is a great place to look for hardy resident and winter visitor species. The feeders here are well-maintained and attract quite a variety of songbirds; here we'll keep an eye out for migrant finches and sparrows as well as the elusive Rusty Blackbird and Orange-crowned Warbler. We'll then walk around the lake, where winter is the best time for many ducks and other waterbirds. On the lake there's always the possibility of finding rarities that usually winter in tidal marshes or coastal waters - including sea ducks, grebes, and even loons, and in the mixed flocks of gulls we may even be able to pick out wanderers from the far north such as Iceland Gull or Black-headed Gull.
