Proposal Writing Workshop
In this workshop, students will build skills to present current and future research. It is designed for graduate students who are working on their dissertation proposal, or who are translating their research into an application for external funding. Coffee and snacks will be provided!
Participants should have a clear research project in mind, and bring a 2-3 page abstract outlining the proposal.
10:30 – 11:00 AM: Key Components of Proposal Writing (Led by Diego & Priyanka)
- Effectively Communicating Your Research: Writing clearly and compellingly for different audiences.
- Understanding the Proposal Writing Process: Key elements of a strong dissertation proposal.
- Dissertation vs. Fellowship Proposals: Differences in purpose, structure, and expectations.
- Analyzing Proposal Examples: Reviewing strong and weak samples of proposal writing.
- Q&A
11:00 – 11:30 AM: Hands-On Workshop
- Students revise their abstract and introduction to capture key proposal elements.
- Peer review and feedback session.
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM: Student Panel
- C&I students who have successfully defended their dissertation proposals share their writing experiences and advise. [Cynthia Baeza and Marino Miranda Noriega]
- SoE students who have received external fellowships (e.g., Spencer Dissertation Fellowship) discuss their process and how to write a proposal that gets funded. [Claudia Triana or Yaa Oparebea Ampofo]
