It had been months since she’d handed over the keys to the mansion. She often dreamt of it: wind blowing through its broken windowpanes, mysterious water in the basement, all the ghostly memories of happier times. But she knew she had to go.

Eventually, she knew: she would head to the big city to seek her fortune. She didn’t know where the journey would take her, but she knew she wouldn’t do it alone. Her friends were eager to help her find a new home.
As she stood on the steps of her temporary digs, her future seemed both bright and tenuous. Everything that had happened before felt like backstory. This new era felt like a prologue. She turned the key and stepped inside.
