Project Owlnet Season Kickoff

Join Indiana Audubon at the Indiana Dunes State Park on Oct. 18 and 19 for a special kickoff to our Northern Saw-whet Owl banding demonstrations. These free nights, offered this year, provide a unique opportunity to observe the owl banding process, learn from expert ornithologists, and see Indiana's smallest owl up close, set against the natural backdrop of the Indiana Dunes. Whether you're a seasoned bird enthusiast, a curious nature lover, or seeking a special educational activity, our saw-whet owl banding demonstrations offer an unforgettable experience.

Programs begin at 7 p.m. CT. Participants can observe captured owls being banded outdoors at the banding field station during hourly checks. You're welcome to stay as long as you like, as volunteers conduct a minimum of three checks each night. Please bring a lawn chair, snacks, warm clothing, and a flashlight. Conditions providing, a campfire will be available both nights with s'mores.

There is no registration required for youth 16 years of age and under. Please read and agree to the IAS Field Trip Release to participate in IAS led events and trips. The event is free, but registration is required as parking is limited. Indiana State Park entry fees apply. Purchase an annual pass for free entry all year long. Donations are welcome and assist Indiana Audubon fund supplies for our ongoing Project Owlnet research.

Note: Due to the sensitive nature of the owls and the banding process, ticketing capacity is limited. Advance registration is required to secure your spot in this memorable experience.

The weather conditions may impact our nightly programs. If your registered night is canceled due to rain or high winds, we'll gladly help you reschedule for another night that suits you, pending availability.
