About José Luis Hernández Bañuelos
With over three decades of experience and more than two hundred works built across Mexico and abroad, José Luis Hernández Bañuelos has turned architecture into a language that embraces. His work emerges from deep listening, a reverence for nature, and an unshakable belief that space holds the power to transform lives.
Recipient of the 2020 National Housing Award, his career has been recognized for its innovative vision and deeply human approach to creating spaces that are not only lived in but deeply felt. He has been distinguished with two honorary doctorates and has been named among Mexico’s Most Influential People for his contributions to culture, education, and social impact.
After the 2017 earthquake in Mexico, he led Proyecto Esperanza Jojutla, a housing reconstruction initiative that brought dignity, comfort, and new beginnings to hundreds of families. Through his leadership, architecture became an act of faith in humanity, a way to heal and rebuild hope.
For more than a decade, he has served as a university professor, inspiring new generations with a genuine commitment to architecture with soul. His vision unites art, history, and social sensitivity, creating a bridge between matter and emotion.
In his sculptures, that same gaze expands: forms that engage with memory, textures that invite silence, and materials that hold stories. Each piece is an act of love, a moment of gratitude made tangible, a way of creating beauty that touches, honors, and heals.
