Workshop Description

Non-profit and charitable organizations are excellent at responding to emerging needs in real time, however this can get in the way of proactive program planning. This leads to the development of programs and services “on the fly,” which can lead to a variety of risks to the community, staff, and to the organization as a whole. This is where Program Development Skills come in – when applied systematically to programs and services, it helps to promote stability, sustainability, and success for your staff and the communities you serve.

This workshop will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate a “Program Science” approach into the development and delivery of diverse, culturally responsive programs and services in your organization. You will engage in small and large group discussions, and will have the opportunity to practice concrete Program Development skills that lead to building a logic model and theory of change for a program or service you currently run. Templates and resources will be shared with each participant, and tips and tricks to doing this work efficiently and effectively will be shared along the way.

Learning Objectives

 • Understand “Program Science” and how it drives the program development process in non-profit and charitable organizations.
 • Understand the program development cycle and identify where your focus program is situated.
 • Understand the role that logic models and a theory of change play in structuring the flow of resources and communicating the impact of your work.
 • Practice applying program development skills to a program or service that you run by using logic model templates that can be implemented in your organization.
 • Identify where and how program development processes fit within the broader context of culturally diverse and responsive health, social service or educational non-profit/charitable organizations.

This workshop is ideal for:

 • Program coordinators, managers, directors or executive directors responsible for the administration of programs and services in non-profit/charitable organizations.
 • Non-profit staff from health, education and/or social service organizations.
 • Ideal for community-based organizations.
 • Non-profit start-ups.
 • Students in human services (social work, psychology, nursing, health sciences, etc.).
