Intro to Celebratory Batik!
Date: April 5, 3:00-5:00pm (one day class)
Appropriate for people age 8 and up. All kids under age 14 must be accompanied by an adult (accompanying adults don't have to pay if they are not making a project themselves).
Join us to learn basic batik skills!
Created in the Procession of the Species Art studio long ago, this form of batik is best described as “Celebratory”, because celebrate is exactly what it does – beautiful colors and designs flying high as banners and windsocks, worn as tunics, wrapped around drums, making feathers, scales, and fur for your creature.
The Procession batiks are made using a simple method, where designs are drawn with warm soy wax on fabric, then the fabric is painted. Once the wax is removed, the design pops out in white against the colorful background.
This class will focus on learning the method by making windsocks or tunics.
If you have a larger project in mind, you might get a good start on it but have to come back and work on your own to finish it. You will make your own design or trace some patterns that are premade.
With basic skills you learn here, it’s all easily done to start or complete your costume for The Procession of the Species Celebration!
