About the programme

Textile as a constructed form of material has existed for more than 5000 years. The evolution of
textile construction technology is a record of our development on several fronts – cultural beliefs,
breakthroughs in science, rise in consumption, and most recently, attempts at reversing
environmental impacts of our habits.
This talk introduces contemporary examples of our collective effort to experiment and discover
new ways to produce, reclaim, distribute, and consume materials. With increasing urgency for
change towards more responsible relationships with materials, are we on the brink of a paradigm
shift?

About the speaker

Tiffany Loy is a Singaporean artist, trained in industrial design in Singapore, and textile-weaving in Kyoto. Loy graduated from the Royal College of Art, with an MA in Textiles, specialising in weaving, and was a recipient of the DesignSingapore Scholarship. Since the founding of her studio in 2014, Loy’s experimental works have been exhibited internationally, at venues such as Singapore Art Museum, Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art, and La Triennale di Milano.

Exploring relationships between elements of materiality such as colour, structure, and tension, Loy invites viewers to take a closer look and indulge in the act of observing materials. Loy’s background in product and textile design has led to her unique approach in creating materials with minute details, while keeping in mind their overall impact in the larger, spatial context.
