W. SHANSHAN 珊然軒 is launching a new four day programme as a part of Asian Art London's summer event . We are happy to invite Ms Keiko Uchida, Japanese tea master to provide guests with a private Japanese tea ceremony and workshop:
1. A talk by Keiko about the history of green tea, and the philosophy and cultural background behind the Japanese Tea Ceremony, which can involve gardening, ceramics, textiles, architecture, calligraphy and food, as well as tea.
2. The demonstration, where Keiko prepares and serves a cup of matcha tea and some sweets to each guest. She teaches guests the traditional way of serving and drinking a cup of matcha tea in public, with traditional gestures and manners. And each visitor has the chance to take on the role of host and guest, using traditional equipment. During the session you will have the benefit of tasting some sweets and at least two different kinds of very top grade of ceremonial matcha tea from Kyoto. All of our matcha teas are directly imported from two of the most esteemed tea houses in Japan, Ippodo and Marukyu Koyamaen of Kyoto. Group is only 6 people as all of them are serving and having a cup of matcha tea.
3. The tea ceremony is following by an introduction of Japanese ceramics presented by Dr. Shanshan Wang. You will have the opportunity to handling some of them.

A qualified tea ceremony master, Keiko Uchida has been practising the Japanese tea ceremony for 25 years. She is always willing to open her studio near Ladbroke Grove (when the pandemic allows) to share her knowledge and experience of the tea ceremony, of matcha tea, and of the whole world of Japanese culture. For private individuals, for groups, for events and for business occasions.
LARGE SHIGARAKI JAR 日本辻村史朗信楽焼大壺
TSUJIMURA SHIRO (B. 1947), 44 cm high
Description: This large Japanese stoneware jar (tsubo) is made in a shigaraki style, wood fired with heavy natural ash glaze deposits in a variety of coloured shades. The uneven surface and the asymmetric form are similar to the Korean “moon jar” type of large white glazed jar in this catalogue, due to the shape being formed in the manual process. Shigaraki wares were historically appreciated in tea ceremonies because of their incomplete effects and imperfection making it fit the wabi aesthetics. The potter‘s signature is incised in the upper body part of the vessel, similar to “X”, which represents Tsujimura Shiro who is one of the most famous and active Japanese potters today. Inspired by tea aesthetics, he makes dramatic functional ceramics vessels that adapt the traditional method while allowing uncontrolled process to create unique effects in the glaze and form of each piece. His ceramics works have been collected by major world renown museums, such as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum.
