Children's Museum of the Arts families are invited to enjoy a private guided tour of MASA Galeria at Rockefeller Center's Rink Gallery on Saturday, June 11 at 12 PM.
This event is free for CMA members; non-members are welcome to join for $10 per attendee. Group size is limited and advance registrations are encouraged. Please note that masks are required for all visitors.
Mexico City's MASA Galeria brings Mexican art + design to Rockefeller Center through June 24. MASA will take over the 8,000 square foot former federal post office underground, present functional works on the plaza, and take over the iconic flagpoles at Rock Center with an installation by the artist Pia Camil.
The exhibition will feature all-new contemporary design and functional art from established practitioners such as Frida Escobedo, Alma Allen, and Pedro Reyes to more emerging practices like Panoramma and Xavi Lorand, who have never shown in the US before, alongside historical pieces by artists who lived and worked in Mexico and the US at points (such as Isamu Noguchi and Martin Ramirez).
In addition, Pia Camil presents “Saca Tus Trapos Al Sol” (“Air Out Your Dirty Laundry”) — a major public art installation that will replace the 193 flags representing the nations of the UN at Rockefeller Center with a multi-strand clothesline of more than 700 items of used clothing donated in a public exchange with Mexico City residents. Through this work, Pia breaks the conventional form and function of a flag — believing that abstract symbols on a rectangular fabric is perhaps inadequate for representing a group of people.
