Printing and Surface Decoration on Ceramics with Alondene Philips
This course offers you the opportunity to learn about a wide range of decorative techniques to use on clay to create unique imagery, pattern and surfaces. You will make clay slabs, tiles and hand-built items and use a variety of techniques to add decorative pattern and texture through the use of coloured slips, sprigs, underglazes, oxides and glazes. You will have the opportunity to develop and mix techniques to build depth and colour ways, whilst also considering how to develop repeat patterns and design ideas.
The course will focus on elements taken from three key areas including:
Sgraffito, Mishima and slip trailing
Texturising clay through the creation of stamps, sprigs and texture sheets
Printing on clay using silkscreen, stencils and image transfer
Whilst the course focuses on elements taken from of these three topic areas over each five week period, the course also offers flexibility for individuals to continue the development of techniques learnt on previous parts of the printing and decorating ceramics course and provides a space to undertake individual project work that is focused on ceramic surface design. At the start of the course, Alondene will outline the key topics covered in the course and discuss any specific project work that the group or individuals wish to undertake.
Alongside this work, you will also be given the opportunity to see how different techniques work together and consider the work of well- known ceramic artists.
