� Characters �These are the following principals that would be required in our production:
Comic
WILLY WIDDLE: A royal lacky.
A young and carefree character who is always up for a laugh. Uses hand actions to overcompensate but is warm and likeable like a true comic to the audience. We see a separate side to the character, who sometimes feels lonely and comes across needing friends. He is also trying push away Nurse Hetty’s loves away throughout the show.

Dame
NURSE HETTY HAIRSPRAY: The royal nanny.
A typical panto dame with lots of physical comedy played throughout the show. She’s not sweet and dainty – she’s rough and seen life. She is trying her hardest to get Willy to fall in love with her. She also has a heart of gold and will try anything to try and save Rapunzel.

Lead - Princess
RAPUNZEL: The girl with the magical hair.
The princess of the story but with a little bit of attitude. Young and is about to celebrate her 18th birthday within the story. She knows what she wants in life and knows deep down she will get it one day – but she doesn’t know how. She’s easily confused (but not daft) because she’s only ever known what Gothel has said to her about the outside world. She’s also deeply in love with a prince who once tried to save her. Easily swayed but not a typical princess.
Considering young females for this role with a strong singing voice.
Villain
GOTHEL: An evil witch.
Older but glamorous lady. Not your typical villain – witch etc but a strict headteacher who holds all the strings in her hand, until things go wrong. We then see a bit of panic within her but still in control. She’s always calm but every so often must snap and think fast. Very good power of persuasion. Must also be a good character actor – as must change into an old lady at the end of the show.
Considering females of all ages for this role. Must strong singing voice.
Prince
PRINCE GEORGE: A dashing young royal.
A young man very handsome and dashing but can’t stop thinking about the girl he never saved the castle. Not a typical prince of saving the day but just a young man who has fallen in love.
Considering all young adults for this role. Must have a good singing voice.
Straight Characters
KING: Rapunzel’s father.
The King in this tale is an old and wise character who has tried to carry on looking after his kingdom for the past 18 years but at the back of his mind is always his missing daughter. A strong character on the outside but a worrier inside.

QUEEN: Rapunzel’s mother.
An older and wiser character once again and like the King is always putting on for her Kingdom. However she’s also taking on the worry from the King to keep him calm as well… I imagine that she comes up with the ideas to keep Rapunzel in people’s minds.

Sidekicks
BALL: A comic villain.
SOCKET: A comic villain.
A pair of very funny characters can be played by all ages. This comedy pair would need to have good character and comedy skills as well as working well against each other. We would also be looking for a pair with good physical theatre skills. The best way to imagine these is with two genies from Disney’s Aladdin. Always jumping from idea to idea (and just want to earn a bit of extra money). As normal one is the brains, and one is a little less intelligent.

Fairy’s
FAIRY WELL: A good fairy.
FAIRY GOOD: A good fairy.
Two traditional fairies to play against Fairy Nuff. They like to play a trick on each other and on Rapunzel too but no malice in it. They are trying to show Rapunzel what she needs to do in life without laying it out on a plate. Must work well with working with others.

FAIRY NUFF: A fairy with attitude
A traditional pantomime fairy once again but in a bit of a strop. Doesn’t really want to be there but it’s like she’s been told by the other two she’s got to come along. Considering people of all ages but must be a good character actor.

SERGENT HAWKEYE - Supporting Role
A fun small part with lots of character acting involved. Think dad’s army captain.

Ensemble
We are looking for a good strong ensemble who will be kept busy through the show. We will be using them as your traditional town people / marketplace sellers but also as lantern operators and flyers through the show. We also wish to use our strong ensemble’s vocals throughout the show – because we have some fabulous numbers. There are also ample opportunities for the ensemble to get involved more with single lines within scenes.
We are also looking for young people as well to take part in the show.
Dancers
We are looking for a strong dancer team to join our production of Rapunzel. We will be looking for a senior team and junior team within the show and will be working with Kerry mostly within the production. We have a fun mixture of large numbers as well as small songs. Dance solo’s may be required.

Sunday 14 July 2024 1.30pm principals and chorus
Auditions are at All Hallows Church Hall, Wellingborough.
