Prevention and Management of Oral Complications in Medical Oncology

Course Description:
Dentists and members of dental teams play a crucial role in the management of oncology patients. This presentation will focus on identification and treatment/prevention of common oral complications of cancer therapy with a focus on complications of chemotherapy and hematopoietic cell transplantation including oral mucositis, oral infections, salivary gland dysfunction, Medic*tion-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, and emerging complications of immunotherapies.

Meet the Speaker: David Dean, DDS, MSD
Dr. David Dean is the director of the Oral Medicine service at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and the program director of the Oral Medicine MSD program at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. A lifelong Husky, he completed his BS, DDS, and MSD in Oral Medicine at UW. He returned as full-time faculty in 2014 after several years in general dental practice in Tukwila. In 2016, he was honored to receive the School of Dentistry’s highest teaching honor, the Bruce R. Rothwell Distinguished Teaching Award.
He is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral Medicine, a fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, a fellow in the American College of Dentists, and Seattle Met “Top Dentist” in the field of Oral Medicine. He was a participant in the 7th World Workshop of Oral Medicine in Göthenburg, Sweden, is an editor for the upcoming Frontiers in Oral Medicine special edition: Oral Complication in Cancer Patients, and a site Principal Investigator for NIH/NIDCR-funded R01 examining long-term oral health outcomes in patients with chronic Graft-versus-Host disease.
He lives in Edmonds, WA with his wife, Dr. Brittany Dean (a pediatric dentist). He enjoys collecting books and lifting heavy things.
Course Topics & Objectives:
At the conclusion of this course, participants will:
1. Identify and characterize common oral complications of cancer therapy.
2. Design a plan to prevent, mitigate, and/or therapeutically manage oral complications in oncology.
3. Determine when to treat and when to refer patients experiencing oral complications in cancer therapy.
