Premiere screening of “A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot.”
This 80-minute film, directed by filmmaker Annie Laurie Medonis, chronicles the extraordinary journey of Bloodroot, an historic feminist vegan restaurant and bookstore in Bridgeport, CT, and the pioneering women behind it.
For the past four years, Medonis has documented the lives of Bloodroot's founders, Selma Miriam (89) and Noel Furie (79), whose identities as queer vegan feminists have shaped the ethos and endurance of their iconic establishment.
Together, they created a safe, inclusive space for women, the queer community and others seeking an escape from patriarchal norms.
Founded in 1977, Bloodroot is more than just a restaurant — it is a cultural and political hub for feminist activism, LGBTQ+ visibility and community-building.
Bloodroot stands as a living testament to the power of feminism, food and activism, and “A Culinary Uprising” captures its legacy with profound depth and resonance.
The U.S. and Canada were once home to more than 230 feminist restaurants, but Bloodroot remains the longest-running feminist restaurant in North America, and one of only two still in operation today.
The documentary delves into how this unique space dedicated to social justice, vegan cuisine and activism has defied the odds and remained a vital resource for its community for nearly five decades.
It also highlights the importance of lesbian visibility, women-owned businesses and spaces that prioritize the well-being and self-expression of marginalized groups.
