Engender Equality invites you to attend Practitioner Skills in Preventing Domestic Violence: Transforming Gender Socialisation and Challenging the Programmed Polyvagal Nervous System
Presented by Dr. Leanne Nunn and special guests Dr.Ron Frey and Dr. Romy Winter
Build new strategies for prevention founded on recent research by Dr Lea Nunn that connects polyvagal theory with grooming in domestic violence.
It is estimated that thirty per cent of women across the world have experienced intimate partner abuse (IPA) in their lifetimes, and this rate has not reduced despite recent increases in research, policy attention, and funding. The overall aim of this workshop is to provide practitioners with practical strategies that they can implement in their work with individuals and groups that assists in the prevention of IPA.
The research that informs this workshop was completed in 2024 by Dr Lea Nunn. It investigated the earliest warning signs of IPA and discovered interconnected sociological, psychological, and physiological components. These elements disguise the recognition of a “tremor” that warns of abuse in relationships and is developed through the programmed vagal brake of polyvagal theory. The application of this understanding of the tremor that will be provided in this workshop, and its link to the newly developed IPA grooming framework, provides a unique perspective of the beginning of abusive relationships. Strategies for de-programming the polyvagal nervous system, working with the socialisation that disguises the warning signs of abuse, and unpacking the grooming that occurs within IPA will form the basis of this prevention workshop designed specifically for practitioners.
