About this Event

Join us in-person in London at Pollard Thomas Edward's studio, or in Edinburgh (location TBC) or online for the finale of the Practice Action series, and a chance to connect with a host of incredible organisations.

The built environment is responsible for approximately 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, therefore those working to create, transform and maintain buildings, infrastructure and public space have a great opportunity to make positive change. Over the last 6 months Architects Declare and the Architects Climate Action Network have collaborated to produce a series of events, empowering built environment professionals to transform the way they practice: reducing the impacts of their operations and built projects. At the first part of the event we will look at where we are now, the state of the industry, and where we all collectively need to get to. We will showcase some of the positive transformations that have been prompted by these events, and hear from:

  • James York: Architect, PassivHaus designer & Net Zero Carbon building consultant @ Collective Architecture
  • Laura Baron: Head of Sustainability @ Purcell
  • Rachael Owens: Head of Sustainability & Buckley Gray Yeoman

We also know that the conversation needs to go beyond emissions reductions. The built environment is political: it can entrench colonial worldviews, or become a catalyst for radical social change. Architects and other built environment professionals need to become more comfortable discussing the wider ramifications of the systems to which they contribute. During the second part of this event we will create a ‘World Cafe,’ with tables hosted by diverse organisations and groups. Each table will be held around a theme, provocation or offer of advice, and participants will be invited to join tables, get involved in the conversation and practise their skills in engaging with topics outside of their everyday.

Many of us experience climate anxiety, and we can fall into the trap of feeling like the problem is ours alone to solve. By opening our eyes to the incredible groups that already exist taking direct action, we can find ourselves again, as a part of tapestry of hopeful action.
