Course Overview
This comprehensive seven-week course will provide practical, legal, and spiritual guidance on Islamic teachings surrounding death. From the final moments of life to burial and beyond, participants will learn to navigate key processes, fulfil religious obligations, and spiritually prepare themselves for their own eventual return to Allah.
Week 1: Monday 28th April 2025 - The Final Moments
- Being around a loved one in their final moments.
- Recommended acts during the dying process.
- Ethical considerations in DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) orders and Switching off Life Support
Week 2: Monday 05 May 2025 - The Post-Death Process
- Steps for registering the death in the UK.
- Delaying burial
- Postmortems: Islamic perspectives and alternatives.
- Child deaths with the NHS
- Sunnah of offering condolences: Etiquette and practices.
- Choosing a funeral director
Week 3: Monday 12th May 2025 - Islamic Rites Towards the Deceased
- Understanding funeral costs and financial responsibilities.
- Who pays for funeral costs?
- Introduction to the four fundamental rites of the deceased:
- Washing (Ghusl).
- Shrouding (Kafan).
- Funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah).
- Burial (Dafn).
Week 4: Monday 19th May 2025 - The Four Rites of the Deceased
- Step-by-step guidance on performing Ghusl (washing).
- Proper method for shrouding (Kafan).
- How to lead and participate in Salat al-Janazah.
- Burial procedures: Islamic rulings and practical steps.
Week 5: Monday 26th May 2025 - Practical Training Session
- Hands-on training in performing Ghusl (washing) and Kafan (shrouding).
- Guidance on proper technique and common mistakes.
Week 6: Monday 02 June 2025 - Preparing for Death
- Spiritual preparation: Reflecting on mortality and strengthening faith. Al-Ghazali/ Al Haddad
- Maintaining a will (Wasiyyah) and other practical and religious considerations.
- Visiting the deceased after burial: Etiquette and recommended practices.
- Continuing good deeds for the deceased: Dua, charity, and Sadaqah Jariyah.
Week 7: Monday 09th June 2025 - Closing, Additional Topics & Dinner
- Open session to address outstanding questions or topics.
- Group reflection and discussion.
- Final dinner to mark the end of the course and build community bonds.
Teacher
Shaykh Hasan Shire is an NHS chaplain with hands-on experience in Islamic funeral rites, including the washing and shrouding of the deceased. He holds ijāzah in these practices from senior scholars in Tarim, Yemen. Rooted in both practice and tradition this course will offer a compassionate, dignified and spiritually grounded approach to death and dying.
