Connor Newcombe, a 24-year-old man with autism, will do a poetry reading from his new book, “101 POEMS,” at the Potsdam Public Library Saturday, June 8th beginning at 10 am.
Through his poems, Connor reveals his inner-most thoughts and worries. In one brief poem after another he explains what autism
is for him and he ponders whether people will look past "my idiosyncrasies." Connor stresses over "What will happen to me when my mother and grandmother die?"And he concludes his "Love on the Spectrum" poem with "If they can find love, maybe I can, too."
Almost all of Connor's 101 poems are brief and easily understood despite their profundity, but not all are about his feelings and experiences as a person with autism. He applies his unique ability to turn out poems in rapid succession to baking a casserole,
nature, having coffee with his grandma, and his favorite topic, cats.
From his first poem, “What is Autism to Me?” to the last, “Father Time” Connor weaves a complicated tapestry of thoughts, insights, images, sincerity and humor. You will feel you’ve grown close to him just through reading his poetry.
The public is invited to remain for a celebration party following the reading.
Support for Connor’s poetry is provided by the Potsdam Public Library and Carlisle Law Firm in collaboration with the Institute for Learning Centered Education Autism Initiative.
“101 POEMS” is available in advance of the event at https://a.co/d/7rDnJUI and Connor will sign copies following the reading and discussion.
