a Bennington Historical Society presentationFor over 30 years, Joyce Held has brought Pownal’s history to life as a dedicated member of the Pownal Historical Society. Now, she invites you on a journey through time to uncover the real story of Pownal—from its rugged frontier beginnings to the modern community we call home today.
Through personal stories, historical discoveries, and reflections on the town’s challenges and triumphs, Joyce reveals how the people of Pownal shaped its 265-year transformation. It’s a story of resilience, innovation, and change that connects the past to the present in ways you’ve never imagined.
After spending years traveling with her “Sailor” husband, Joyce Held settled in Pownal in 1968 with her husband and two children. She immediately fell in love with the town and its close-knit community. As a VISTA Volunteer with the Peace Corps, Joyce partnered with another volunteer to establish the Pownal Preschool and Day Care Center, creating a lasting resource for local families. She had a deep appreciation for the stories and knowledge shared by the town’s older residents, which inspired her to delve into Pownal’s history and the genealogy of its people. An avid reader and dedicated researcher, Joyce is passionate about bringing history to life through storytelling, weaving narratives that go beyond mere facts and dates. She has been an active Board member of the Pownal Historical Society for 30 years.
