Enacted in 1786 by Spanish Louisiana Governor Esteban Miró, the Tignon Lawforced women of African descent (free and enslaved) to cover their hair with a knotted headdress, or "tignon," to mark them as inferior to white women. Aimed at stifling the "excessive" beauty and perceived social threat of Black women, it was largely a response to jealousy from the wives of slaveholders and the growing influence of women of color in New Orleans.
