Join Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada and the federal court for a panel discussion exploring custody issues in tribal court. The discussion will explore the history of tribal courts, tribal jurisdiction over nontribal members, and remedies of tribal courts. Procedures for domestic violence cases include jurisdictional issues between tribal and state courts, full faith and credit issues, waiver of jurisdiction, transferring venue, Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), enforcement issues, and steps of a domestic violence matter in tribal courts. The event will close with a policy discussion.
Speakers will include Professor Danielle Finn (Director of the Indian Nations Gaming & Governance Program), the Honorable Kostan R. Lathouris (Chief Judge of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Court), and Patrick Hirsch (Attorney with the Children’s Attorneys Project).
The Pro Bono Project will present the course online via GoTo Meeting and in-person in the Engelstad Family Classroom at Legal Aid Center. This CLE is a partnership with Legal Aid Center and the federal courts, including District Court Magistrate Judge Daniel Albregts. Pro bono attorneys who refer others to this CLE can receive a free Starbucks gift card. *Lunch will be provided for in-person attendees.
Nevada-licensed or emeritus-certified attorneys can earn 1.0 general CLE credit by attending this program either online or in-person. To receive CLE credit, attorneys must take a new pro bono case or volunteer for two Ask-A-Lawyer sessions. You can select a case or sign up for Ask-A-Lawyers from www.lacsnprobono.org.
