Welcome to Somatic Yoga, a practice of realigning the body through careful awareness where the focus is on gentle activation using the 5 elements of nature as a guide: earth, water, air, fire, and ether.
In Sanskrit these elements are called pancha (meaning five) mahabhutas (meaning supreme material element) of the cosmos.
In life we are constantly in contact with these elements but what we don't notice too often is how we connect with them within our bodies.
This requires us to be intentional with the way we move our bodies. How do we move with these elements, or more importantly, how do they move us?
The answer to this question will be revealed within a series of asanas and mo(v)ments of somatic awareness. Through this practice we will become conscious of the nature that moves us as we remain a witness to the tiny "happenings" (as Buddhist philosopher Alan Watts puts it) in our body.
The asanas are offered as a guide into the elements of our bodies. Each asana awakens an element, strengthens it, and invites us to be more present with it.
The somatic awareness is intended to give a pause and observe the sensations that are happening inside our body after a series of movements and poses. Where does your attention move as the body becomes still? How does the body want to continue to move with the elemental energy that was created?
Each session will work with a specific element.
What we will learn:
🌱the qualities of the elements,
🌱where it is in the body according to the "body pot" image,
🌱how we can use these practices in our daily lives whenever we feel disconnected from the body, from nature.
After the class there will be time for a brief reflection period.
You are in constant co-creation with nature because you ARE nature. Let us remember how to be present with ourselves and offer our bodies the space it needs to be moved.
