Portsmouth, Ohio’s ‘Pill Mill Killer’: True Crime as Public HistoryA Conversation with Philip Eil, author of Prescription for Pain
Thursday, October 10
4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Author Philip Eil will read from his recently published book, Prescription for Pain: , and then sit down with Prof. Andrew Feight, the Director of the SSU Center for Public History, for a wide-ranging conversation about the history of the opioid epidemic and whether true crime is a form of public history.
During his book-related research, Phil Eil traveled to Portsmouth ten times between 2010 and 2022, interviewing dozens of local residents, and clocking countless hours in the local history room of the Portsmouth Public Library. In the book, Eil dives deep into both Portsmouth's general history and, specifically, the damage caused by pain clinics and corrupt doctors in the area. Phil's writing about Portsmouth has been published twice in the Cincinnati magazine: in the award-winning 2017 article, "The Pill Mill That Ravaged Portsmouth," and, most recently, an excerpt from his book, entitled "Portsmouth Gets Clean."
