Learn to paint a portrait in oil from a life model, while gaining an undertanding of drawing, color mixing and rendering light and form.
About this Event

Date and schedule: Saturday, March 1, 9:00 - 12:00 + 1:00 - 4:00 PM and Sunday, March 2, 9:00 - 12:00 PM. Nine hours in total with one hour lunch break on Saturday.

Description: Aina will instruct students in painting a portrait in oil from a life model, going over the basics of drawing, color mixing and rendering light and form. This is the perfect workshop if you are a beginner or if you have a little bit of experience with oil paints. Aina will be doing demos, painting alongside with the participants, and giving individualized, personal feedback.
Fee: $285.00 including model fees.


Class size: 5 - 10 students

Class planning:

– Day 1: Drawing, study of head structure. Light and form. Big areas of color.

– Day 2: Rendering form and details. Final touches.

Cancellation policy:

If a student decides to withdraw the course two weeks prior to the beginning of the workshop, tuition will be refunded. After that date there are no refunds.

TEACHING ARTIST:

Aina Clotas is a figurative oil painter born in Catalonia, Spain, in 1987. After attending an undergraduate filmmaking course, Aina received her BFA from the Universitat de Barcelona in 2012. To further her training, she studied traditional painting methods at the Barcelona Academy of Art, graduating in 2015. She taught at the Barcelona Academy of Art, La Salle University and the Florence Academy of Art in Sweden and is currently teaching at the College of San Mateo. Aina's personal work is influenced from both the nineteenth century atelier methods and the cinematography language. Her work has been exhibited in Spain, the United States, Portugal, Canada, Estonia and United States. Aina lives in Half Moon Bay, where she works at Nuance Fine Art, the art studio she shares with her husband Joe Altwer. MATERIALS LIST for STUDENTS to BRING

Easels are provided.

Drawing:

· Vine charcoal and kneadable eraser.

· Drawing paper (Canson, Stonehenge, Ingres, Bristol or even newsprint are suitable)

Painting:

· Brushes: At least 5 or 6 long haired and long handled brushes varying in sizes, from slightly smaller than a pinky finger to slightly larger than a thumb. Filbert, flats or rounds preferred. Most of them should be hog bristle brushes, but variety is also welcome, such as sable or synthetics.

· Oil paints: Titanium or Lead white, Yellow ochre, Burnt sienna, Cadmium red light or medium, Ultramarine blue. Other pigments optional.

· Mediums: Linseed oil, Odorless Mineral Spirit (OMS). Alternatives: Walnut oil or Liquin.

· Surfaces: One stretched canvas or panel. Ideal size around 16 x 20 inches. Surfaces have to be ready to paint on with a light imprimatura* on them.

· Palette knife and at least one medium cup, preferably both made out of metal.

· Old fabric rags or paper towel.

· OMS brush cleaning container with sealed and secured lid.

* An imprimatura is a layer of a neutral color very diluted with solvent (Gamsol or turpentine or turpenoid) to get rid of the white of the Canvas. It should be applied 24 hours before using the canvas.
