Create a 2/3 size portrait over a week-end. On this sculpture course delivered Sue Larner and Olga Fladmark over two days you will be taught to sculpt directly from the model using clay. The teaching methods will include demonstrations, hands-on guidance, constructive feedback, one-to-one support, and time allowed for periods of quiet observation.Traditional techniques of measuring key points with callipers to set out your portrait with accurate proportions, and consideration of the skull and bone structure beneath, will be the starting point of this course.
Participants will then progress to considered observation looking firstly at profiles, then planes, angles, shapes, and shadows to sketch these in clay.
This course sets out to challenge preconceived ideas of the forms of the head and face and will guide the participants to consider soft flesh, hard bone, muscles, expression and the texture and movement of the hair with the aim to capture the features and character of the sitter.
The course will include discussion about how the marks you make and how your methods of handling clay can enhance your work.
The aim of the course is to complete a head on an armature in 2/3 life size. At the end of the second day the participants will hollow the work out in preparation for optional firing*.
The course will run with a small class of a maximum of 10 students which will allow for all abilities from beginners to more advanced students to gain or improve their sculpting skills. There will be regular breaks for cups of tea and discussion.
All tools, armatures and materials will be provided.
Please bring: a packed lunch, protective sensible clothing and footwear, sketchbook or notebook.
*studio firing charge applies
