Join us for a focused five-week portrait drawing course held in the unique studio environment of Summerhall.
About this Event

Working each week from a professional life model, this class offers a thoughtful and practical introduction to observational portrait drawing, suitable for both beginners and those with prior experience.

The course places emphasis on careful looking, proportion, structure, tone, and expression. Through a balance of demonstrations, guided exercises, and sustained drawing time, participants will develop confidence and clarity in their portrait practice, while being encouraged to explore a personal and expressive approach.


Course Overview

This evening class is open to anyone aged 16 and over who wishes to explore drawing the human face from life. Sessions are structured yet relaxed, allowing space for experimentation, questions, and individual guidance. The setting at Summerhall provides an inspiring context for focused study and creative exchange.


Teaching Approach

Each session introduces a clear theme and set of drawing challenges. You will work from different poses and viewpoints, developing your ability to observe accurately while responding sensitively to character and expression. Individual feedback is offered throughout, supporting both technical development and personal exploration.


What You’ll Learn

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Develop a strong understanding of facial proportions, features, and structure
  • Improve your ability to capture expression and character from a live model
  • Build confidence drawing directly from observation
  • Create a small body of portrait studies suitable for informal display or further development

Materials

Easels and drawing boards are provided. Please bring your own paper (A3 or larger recommended) and preferred drawing materials. Suitable media include pencil, charcoal, graphite, coloured pencils, or pastels.

  • Fee: £73.50 (includes participation in a group exhibition)
