People have drawn portraits in every culture throughout history, and they all have one thing in common -- the "portraying" of the eyes, ears, nose, mouth and head shape of their subject reflects the impression, the feeling, the gut instinct of the artist. Joy, anger, wonder, and many other feelings are at the heart of any portrait. So don't worry about making exact images -- that's what photographs are for. You want to express what you see about the person you're drawing. We'll practice head proportions, including full face, three-quarter, portrait, and bowed head, as well as the structures of eye, nose, ear, and mouth and their relationship to each other to make the portrait effective overall. And we'll also look at the effective use of background and lighting to emphasize the subject elements. Your materials fee covers outline notes, papers, and the use of a wide variety of drawing tools. No experience required. Ages 15+
Nancy is best described as an encourager to her students. Remember the children’s book "The Little Engine that Could"? It was her favorite book in 1st grade, “I think I can, I think I can,” Nancy encourages people to have a can-do attitude. In addition to volunteering with a variety of organizations, Nancy homeschooled her children, taught music, various arts and crafts, creative writing, composition, public speaking, and literature. She’s travelled a lot, seen a lot, done a lot, read a lot, and thought a lot and has been published a lot. Nancy’s goal is to encourage her students to explore, experiment, imagine, and enjoy doing something they thought they couldn't do. "I think I can" means "I know you can."
