About this Event

Fete-Fete and Oasis Farm & Fishery presents Portals2Power: a nourishing gathering for Homewood Youth

Portals2Power is an affirmative action in response to the disproportionate weight of the environmental turmoil born by Pittsburgh’s predominantly Black communities. This project uses the portals of plants and art as pathways to healing through self and community care.

Our communities deserve strong and healthy land, water, and airways. Our communities also require strong and healthy advocates. Making demands and building community requires a lot of energy, however we can also restore and pour into ourselves and each other when we are in practice with tools that support our wellbeing. This makes it easier to go out and advocate for ourselves and our communities. By leaning on what we have on hand, we can begin to demand more access to resources for healthier communities, as well as providing tools for navigating the right now.

This community farm and garden based initiative is rooted in affirming for Homewood teens what is possible when we act in unity and take action to design a way forward through the portal of plants, and continuing a conversation on actions we can take to individually and collectively shift our environment, health, and wellbeing and create conditions in which others cease to remain indifferent to the real harm of their actions. We practice tending to ourselves, our gardens, and supporting each other in the endeavor.

This event focuses on sharing with Homewood teens the importance of self-care and community care. We will share a series of self-care tools, cooking demos, and health based activities that support participants in creating a habit of nurturing leisure for themselves through offerings of good vibes.

This work is also supported in community with Junior Green Corps, Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy, and Pittsburgh Park Rangers, as part of a special US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Environmental Education Grant for Homewood teens.
