Portals into Awareness : a photo workshop

In this workshop we will explore Photography and Nature as Portals into our many worlds – incorporating plants, florals, rocks, feathers, branches and seeing them as collaborators, Joy Companions in our Journeys of Transformation, Healing, and Growth.This will be a self-guided photo session with no instructions given as I like to offer a space for exploration, interaction and curiosity to flourish, independent of any teaching or “way” of taking a picture.

We would prefer participants with previous camera and photography experience but definitely open to people with little to no experience; we would like for at least a few participants to bring their own cameras so they can share them and partner up with anyone who doesn’t have access to a camera.

Attendees for this workshop will receive a private link to Velvet Penny's music video, 'Yudith' and learn more about the process and initiative of it. Afterwards, artist and community organizer, Alba, will guide participants in the creative practice of photography while exploring the outdoors.

This workshop is a part of a series hosted by Velvet Penny and Friends to celebrate the 2 year anniversary of her record, 'All the Flowers' which was released in dedication to raising awareness for Domestic Violence. To continue this mission, Velvet Penny is sharing her new music video to initiate continued community care through a series of free art workshops.

About Velvet Penny

Velvet Penny, is a musical collective, dedicated group of community organizers and artists led by singer/songwriter Marlena Martinez. For her debut body of work, Marlena spent several years creating ‘All the Flowers,’ which was released as an album, community zine, and award winning music video dedicated to preventing and healing domestic violence. ‘All the Flowers’ can most simply be described as an art rock album that explores the sounds of folk, alt-jazz, and psychedelia unified through the complexities of dissonance and the lightness of healing.

As a vocalist and community organizer working at the intersection of activism, wellness, and art, Marlena was awarded an artistic residency at CASA Pitzer in Ontario, California hosted by The Arts Area where her music video for ‘All the Flowers’ was on view from November 2022- February 2023. During the opening, Velvet Penny made their debut as a full band but most critically, Velvet Penny’s residency offered free education, art, and wellness programs designed to create kinder and safer communities. Workshops ranged in topics such as somatic consent, zine making, body and trauma work/healing, and self-defense.
