Population Health Spotlight Series 2022-23
Public Health at a Crossroads: Is it time for a new direction?

The last two years have highlighted more than ever the challenges in addressing both emerging and ongoing threats to population health. It has become clear that we need to rethink and retool public health approaches to address many pervasive threats to health and health equity that are built into the fabric of our society. What are the most important lessons of the past few years and what are the next steps for public health research, practice and policy? Voices from across the field of public health will share their reflections as part of Dornsife’s Population Health Spotlight Series for 2022-23.

This event supports one credit hour towards National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) Certified in Public Health (CPH) continuing education credit.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Theresa D. Chapple-McGruder, PhD, assumed the role of Public Health Director at the Village of Oak Park on May 3, 2021. As director of Oak Park’s state-certified local health department, Chapple-McGruder oversees an operation that is one of only four municipal health departments in suburban Cook County certified by the state to provide public health programming.

A governmental and applied epidemiologist, Chapple-McGruder has spent the majority of her career at local, state, and federal health agencies, and with organizations that directly support governmental public health.

During the COVID-19 crises she has helped school districts craft reopening plans and provided expert consultations to recreational sports teams, news media operations, and community-based organizations to help flatten the infection curve and promote vaccination.

Prior to assuming her role, she led the Women’s Health Data and Evaluation team at the Health Resources & Services Administration in Rockville, Maryland. Chapple-McGruder lived in Oak Park from 2005 to 2009 while pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Her education also includes a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Clark University in Atlanta.
