Being a parent is a full-time gig - and sometimes you just need a moment to breathe, to connect, and to create.
About this Event

Held twice a month (during the school term), the Poppet Centre Craft Circle is a warm and welcoming space for active parents (yes, mums and dads!) to unwind over a cuppa, enjoy open-ended discussions with fellow parents, and let your hands play with materials that soothe the soul and spark joy.

Whether you’re into painting, clay play, knitting, crochet, macramé, or simply curious to explore something new — this is your space. There are no expectations, no pressure, and no “Pinterest perfection” needed. Just you, a table of creative goodies, and a room full of like-minded folks.

About the Facilitator

Our Craft Circles are led by Kait Luker, whose path from art to science makes each session uniquely inspiring.

Kait’s first course of study was in Fine Arts, majoring in Ceramics, before her curiosity led her into the world of Medical Science. Over the past 30 years, she has balanced both passions — teaching art classes for children and adults alongside coordinating medical research projects in children’s health and oncology, as well as working in frontline medical services with Ambulance NSW.

It’s this rare blend of creativity, compassion, and clinical insight that gives our Craft Circles their distinctive feel — equal parts mindful, meaningful, and joyfully hands-on.

Kait is joined and supported by other members of The Poppet Centre team, ensuring every circle is welcoming, inclusive, and filled with good company.

Can I bring the kids?

Of course this is a family friendly space, so if you want to bring along your children you can as long as they are under your supervision at all times. The Poppet Centre does not provide supervsion for children during this time as this is time and space for parents to chat, laugh and create.

The Method to Our Madness

Althougth we present the Poppet Centre Craft Circles as a parent group to chat and laugh, because this is what it is primarly all about... but there is more!

The real benefits lay in the deeper levels are more. Science tells us art activities can improve well-being for people of all ages. The calming effects of painting, sketching, sculpture and other creative techniques help reduce anxiety both in the moment and over time. The Poppet Centre Craft Circles will give you the confidence to lead craft at home, beacuse we know when families create art together at home, they can relax and leave daily worries behind.

How does this happen? Well it's simple stydy after study tell us that art and craft activies have six primary benefits:

  1. Stress relief by calming the mind and body,
  2. Confidence building as we learn new skills,
  3. Empathy development by understanding sometimes things are hard at first,
  4. General sense of positivity towards ones quality of life,
  5. Enchance brain development and producitivity through neuroplastivity growth in the brain,
  6. Allieviates the effects of serious and life threatenng illnesses on the brain.
