Balance out your yoga practice and the hecticness of life by taking time to slow down, stretch, and breathe! Yin yoga classes can help students develop greater flexibility and range of motion while becoming more mindful of the body and breath. In contrast to faster-paced and more dynamic “yang” styles such as hatha or vinyasa, which often have a physical focus on stretching and strengthening the muscles, a yin-style yoga practice allows students to enjoy release of the less elastic joints and connective tissues (tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and muscle fascia) and bring their focus more attentively to the breath and inward through long-held poses. Yin yoga poses are also thought to stimulate lower-body meridian lines, energy pathways in Chinese traditional medicine. Although Yin Yoga is slow-paced and calming, appropriate for the beginner, the potential for intense stretching and a meditative experience offers a challenge to even the more experienced yoga student and is an excellent way to balance out one’s overall practice. In these 75-minute yin yoga sessions, you will move through a variety of seated, reclined, prone, and kneeling poses, each held for 3-5 minutes and using passive body weight and gravity to gradually and safely release tension in the connective tissues. Props such as bolsters, blankets, and blocks will be utilized to help support and create space as needed to find the best stretch for your body. Philosophical texts, a brief meditation session, and aromatherapy will also be included for an in-depth, reflective experience, creating harmony between body, mind, and spirit.
