Baker Ben’s Babka Lives On
Many at Congregation Beth Torah remember the late Ben “Baker Ben” Hellman, who was known for baking and donating his famous cinnamon babkas to raise money for our youth group. He was a professional baker with a generous heart.
Last fall, my friend Marcia Rittmaster shared Ben’s handwritten recipe notes with me. While they weren’t a complete recipe, they were enough to inspire me to create a babka in his honor — a new version that carries his spirit forward.
I’ll be sharing this Baker Ben’s Babka at our bake sale on Saturday, August 23rd at Olive Tree in Overland Park (10 a.m.), along with some Fun sourdough flavors
The proceeds from the babka will go toward supplies for the Beth Torah kitchen — especially for making sweets for Oneg Shabbat (our beloved treats after services).
In a way, every loaf is a continuation of Ben’s kindness, turning flour, sugar, and butter into something that brings people together.
