In an attempt to fight against the structural loneliness of cities like Berlin, we will read the Lonely City and visit the Liebermann Villa!
About this Event

Being lonely is a feminist issue - but what does it mean to be lonely in a city like Berlin? How are we living if not connected to the people around us? And how do we even start to connect with people?
Inspired by Olivia Laing's book "The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone", we will question all of this whilst exploring the Liebermann Villa in Wansee. The exhibition focuses on Martha, Käthe and Maria, the women of the Liebermann family and explores their lives and influence on Max Liebermann through different artworks. The Villa also has a cafe and a stunning garden, so we decided to make a day of it. Reading the book is recommended but not compulsary to join.
Note:
You will have to pay for your own ticket to enter the exhibition. We will provide you more info about this via email after booking.
This registration is for non members only!!
About the book:
When Olivia Laing moved to New York City in her mid-thirties, she found herself inhabiting loneliness on a daily basis. Increasingly fascinated by this most shameful of experiences, she began to explore the lonely city by way of art. Moving fluidly between works and lives -- from Edward Hopper's Nighthawks to Andy Warhol's Time Capsules, from Henry Darger's hoarding to the depredations of the AIDS crisis -- Laing conducts an electric, dazzling investigation into what it means to be alone, illuminating not only the causes of loneliness but also how it might be resisted and redeemed.
About the Liebermann Villa in Wansee:
The Liebermann Villa on Lake Wannsee is the former summer house of the painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935) and his family. The villa and the historical garden are today open to the public. The house contains an art museum dedicated to Liebermann’s life and work.
