About this Event
Step into a relaxing world of colour and creativity at our unique Paint Your Pet Event.
All my examples so far are dogs, because those are my pets, but we welcome all types of critters. Doesn't even necessarily have to be yours! Maybe you have an awesome photo of an elephant. We'll make it work ;)
You will provide us with a photo ahead of time, which we will transform into a simple line drawing for you, capturing the simplified essence of your pet. Then we will use Neurographic art therapy techniques to add vibrant colours and bold lines. You're essentially just colouring shapes, and tracing lines, so do not stress. We even use paint pens for most of the line work. This one is as easy, relaxing and you'll end up with a personalized portrait of your best friend. You can even choose your own colour scheme to match your home decor.
Send us your pet photo at [email protected], and we'll do all the editing and provide you with a ready to paint canvas on the night. Just make sure to reference the name of the person who bought the tickets in the email.
Here are some tips for getting the best reference photo:
- It should accurately represent your pet and how you see them/think of them. So consider their facial expression. Try to get them to smile, or stare at you with aloofness or whatever captures your pet’s personality.
- Get outside or near a window, but ideally not in direct harsh light. You want even brightness, not harsh highlights & shadows. An overcast day is ideal, but in the shade on a bright day is also good.
- Don’t worry about the background. We’ll remove it in the editing process. We won’t judge, or even notice if your house is a mess. You can crop it to only include your pet in the photo, but it would be better if you didn’t cut it too close, so that we have a bit more space around the outside if we need to straighten them up a bit.
- Make sure you get your pets eyes in the photo. The more detail you can see the better, but even if you can’t see the detail, we need at least the outer edge shape of the eye. We can fill in the rest with the generic anatomy of an eye if we have to. Often a toy or treat will work to get them to look at you, but then you need to manage holding something and taking the photo. Strange, high-pitched noises work remarkably well.
- Try geting down to your pets eye level, rather than taking the photo from above.
- If you have a pet who won’t sit still and an iPhone, use ‘live mode’ then choose the best frame.
- Take lots of photos, then pick the best one. Try different angles and formats. Landscape & portrait, full body and just face/head.
- Get close rather than zooming in.
- When in doubt, send us a couple of options.
- Your email may ask you if you want to shrink the file size. Unless it’s huge, don’t.
Can't even draw a stick figure?... no worries...we love to trace ;) With step-by-step guidance your painting will turn out fine. We promise :)
We've got everything you need, and if you decide to ignore the instructions and go your own way, rock on!
Bring a friend, a group or make some new connections. If you've got a larger group, send us a quick email or Facebook message and we'll save you some seats together. Kids are welcome, but again, this is a 3 hour session, so use your judgement. We generally recommend 8 years +.
Please arrive 15mins early to allow enough time to pour your drinks & get settled before we begin painting. Bring your own beverages (alcoholic or non) and nibbles if you like, we've got a fridge and tables, but no kitchenware.
Covid Safety - we are limiting class sizes and increasing cleaning, but if you feel at all unwell please stay home. Just send us a message at least 1hr before the event and we will happily refund or exchange your tickets.
We're at our studio at 80 Mather St, just on the line between Garbutt/Mount Louisa between the highway and Bayswater Road. You'll find us behind door #3.
