On Aug 24, 79 ad Mount Vesuvius erupted, both destroying and preserving the city of Pompeii. To commemorate this eruption, the scientific insight it offered, and the extraordinary advancements of the Pompeians, the Saint Louis Science Center will be exploring many of the scientific advancements the Pompeians created. From their advanced plumbing system to their acoustic amphitheaters the Pompeians were a society who valued experimentation and knowledge.All week long we will be highlighting the achievements of the Pompeians leading up to the anniversary of the eruption itself on August 24, 2025:
* Thursday, August 21 - ENTERTAINMENT around Pompeii - We're focusing on the role of theater and create a take-home mask like the ones used in Pompeii's amphitheater (regarded as the oldest known stone amphitheater in the world).
* Friday, August 22 - ECOLOGY - Guests can study the role of gardens around Pompeii's public areas and private homes and use smell to identify plants commonly found around Pompeii. In addition (during late afternoon and evening hours), join our partners from Schlafly brewing to smell different ingredients found in various beers and enjoy a few tasty samples.
* Saturday, August 23 - ENGINEERING - Discover how Pompeii's advanced plumbing system distributed water throughout the city to provide access to clean drinking water for all citizens and delivered heated/cooled water for specific uses within homes, baths and other buildings and then complete a map to best route the supply to the city's residents.
Along with these activities, here are additional special experiences that will be offered on Aug 24 (ERUPTION DAY) throughout the Science Center:
* All of these activities mentioned above.
* Experience the "Great Magma-tude" demonstration on the Energy Stage.
* Discover the role of graffiti in Pompeiian communication.
* Build a Roman style home with our KEVA planks.
* Create a Roman mosaic.
* Learn how the eruption has influenced Italian agriculture today.
* And more...
