During the 16th Century, Latin settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah enjoyed a renewed popularity during the religious turmoil of the Anglican Reformation. The greatest composers of the late Tudor era composed settings of which we will present three: by Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585), Robert White (1538-1574), and Alfonso Ferrabosco the Elder (1543-1588), Elizabeth I’s composer and possibly her spy. During the 16th century, Latin settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah experienced renewed popularity, and new significance when viewed through the lens of the Anglican Reformation.
