What is this talk about?
Policymakers are increasingly interested in fostering entrepreneurship to create jobs and stimulate innovation and economic growth. There exist two prevailing approaches to entrepreneurship policy, top down interventions and bottom up laissez faire. Despite considerable evidence on the general effectiveness of the bottom up approach in encouraging productive entrepreneurship, it appears to be falling out of fashion in favor of the interventionist approach. This talk will discuss the political economy of entrepreneurship policy, highlighting how despite good intentions, government failures can emerge from interventionist policies that unintentionally undermine productive entrepreneurship.
