Hillary Lindsey grew up in tiny Washington, Georgia, and arrived in Nashville in 1994, after enrolling at Belmont University. She signed her first song-publishing deal as a college senior and earned her first #1 song in 2002 (Martina McBride’s “Blessed”). Lindsey won her first of three Grammys in 2007, for “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” one of more than four dozen of Lindsey’s compositions recorded by Carrie Underwood. Lindsey is also a 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee; a 2022 Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee; a two-time Academy of Country Music Songwriter of the Year award winner (2020, 2021); and a Country Music Association Song of the Year award winner (“Girl Crush,” 2015). She wrote songs performed on the television drama Nashville and in the 2018 film A Star Is Born starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. Lindsey also worked with Lady Gaga on the pop star’s 2016 album, Joanne, writing four songs and singing background vocals. The list of artists who have recorded Lindsey’s songs also includes Kelsea Ballerini, Dierks Bentley, Michelle Branch, Florida Georgia Line, Hardy, Parker McCollum, Tim McGraw, Kacey Musgraves, Rascal Flatts, Taylor Swift, and Keith Urban, among others. Lindsey—who often writes with fellow songwriters Lori McKenna and Liz Rose as the Love Junkies—founded her own song-publishing company, Hang Your Hat Music, in partnership with Concord Music Publishing in 2020. This interview with the Museum’s Angela Stefano Zimmer will be illustrated with photos, film, and recordings. After the program, Lindsey will sign commemorative Hatch Show Print posters. Ford Theater. Included with Museum admission. Program ticket required. Free to Museum members.
