Meet me in the Loft!
About this Event

Teens of all poetry experience levels are invited to join Joanna Fox in the loft as she asks the question, what can we find when we search for what we have lost? After learning about poetry as a way of thinking, seeing, and living, the workshop culminates in a Poetry Mic that's open to the public, during which participants are encouraged to read their work.
The workshop will meet in the loft at Bookstore1, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. for five sessions, Tuesdays from 4:30-6 p.m. starting August 27 and ending September 24.

About the workshop:

In reading, writing, and sharing poetry, the following topics will be covered in this workshop:

  1. Searching in the Dark (August 27)
  2. Look Over There (September 3)
  3. Unexpected Combinations (September 10)
  4. Action (September 17)
  5. Editing & Reading (September 24)

Pieces written in this workshop be considered for submission to a variety of poetry contests.

A PoetryMic will be held on Tuesday, September 24 from 6-7 p.m. (free and open to the public) for the express purpose of the particpants to share their work with an audience. All participants are encouraged to participate.

Registration is required. The workshop cost is $75 and includes all five sessions. The cost will cover a copy of the text What Have You Lost? by Naomi Shihab Nye.

About the Facilitator:

Joanna Fox is a recently retired award-winning teacher of award-winning students. Awards include International River of Words Teacher of the Year, USF Lifetime Achievement Award, and Maya Angelou Teacher of Poetry. Joanna has found that the best part of retirement is spending time with her grandchildren, writing, and traveling.

About the Book:

From 140 contemporary poets, many of whom have never been published, Nye gathers observations, ruminations, and informal prose comments on the theme of loss: from clothing or a thought, to deaths of friends and family memebers, of innocence, time, opportunities, pride, a homeland. The selections are all free verse, direct of address, virtually free of obscure imagery or difficult language, most, but not all, originally written in English. Although the general tone is understandably lugubrious, made more so by Michael Nye's array of harshly naturalistic black-and-white portraits, some poets respond to the question of the title question more positively: "I take myself back, fear./You are not my shadow any longer./I won't hold you in my hands." This is heavy reading, but it documents a universal experience in ways that are thought-provoking.
