Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies & Queer Studies, in partnership with the Mellon Foundation, is pleased to announce upcoming poetry workshops with award-winning poet and activist Jamila Osman.
Join us on May 8 at Kaku-ixt Mana Ina Haws from Noon – 2 p.m. and May 15 at Ettihad Cultural Center from Noon – 2 p.m. for our poetry workshops titled, Alternative Modes of Knowledge Production: Poetry as Insurgent Art.
Jamila believes in the power of poetry to create community, heal collectively, and produce scholarship through the insurgent art of poetry. A collection of poems will be curated by students with Jamila.
Jamila has been awarded fellowships from MacDowell, Djerassi, and Caldera. Some of her poems and essays can be found in The New York Times, Al Jazeera, Catapult, Diagram, and in several anthologies including A Map is Only One Story: 20 Writers on Immigration, Family, and the Meaning of Home and The Best of Brevity: 20 Groundbreaking Years of Flash Nonfiction. She is the nonfiction editor of Brink Literary Magazine. She has performed at readings and literary events around the world, including the Palestine Writes Literature Festival and The Lagos International Poetry Festival.
Please note that there is limited capacity available, so be sure to secure your spot early! The first workshop promises to be larger than the second one, offering an enriching experience for all attendees. The second workshop will be smaller and more intimate, offering the space to receive more individual feedback from Jamila and engage in peer review with fellow students. Lunch will be provided, including vegan and gluten-free lunch options and coffee and light refreshments for everyone to enjoy. Don't miss out on this exciting opportunity to learn, connect, and create poetry!
