Poetry Workshop I AM: A Love Letter to Myself

"What would you say if you wrote a poem about you?"

Join us at the Kota Nest for a 2-hour poetry writing workshop led by Artist Ruthy Valdez and Poet Danielle B. Wright. Centered on self-reflection and the power of Black identity, this event is timed to honor the legacy of Black History Month and the intimate spirit of Valentine’s Day.

Through guided prompts and community discussion, you will explore poetry as a powerful tool for affirmation and healing. Under the guidance of our facilitators, you will embark on a unified writing journey to craft:

The "I AM" Love Letter: A deeply personal poem that serves as a written tribute to your own journey. By combining the "I AM" declaration with the intimacy of a love letter, you will create a piece of work that honors your strength, identity, and inner voice.

This is a supportive, welcoming space designed for all levels. Whether you are a seasoned writer or have never written a poem before, your story belongs here. We specifically celebrate the voices of Women of Color, fostering a community of creative expression and confidence in the heart of West Harlem.

Poet Danielle B. Wright and Ruthy Valdez are dedicated to using the arts to empower and uplift. Together, they create environments where participants feel safe to explore their lived experiences and cultural memories through the written word.

HOW TO GET THERE: Kota Alliance is located in the Sugar Hill neighborhood, at 43 St Nicholas Place near 152nd St. between the A/B/C/D 145th Station and C 155th Station, along the M3 bus line. Parking is very limited, with few street spots; the nearest paid lots are at 414 W 155th St and 457 W 150th St.

ACCESSIBILITY: Kota Alliance occupies a historic building, without wheelchair accessibility, with steps inside. (We are fundraising to fix this.) Steps up to the second floor are wide and have a railing for assistance.
