Joanne will read from her just published book "Independence Day." Shoenfeld and Brown both grew up in families directly impacted by Joseph McCarthy's policy of spreading fear of "the enemy within." We live through similar times now with Trump, his enemy’s list and his anti-immigrant policies. Brown's poetry reflects her experience in a family impacted by politicized fears, the "Red Scare" of the early 1950's, along with personal poems of renewal and celebration. Poet and painter, Jane Shoenfeld reads poems in response to paintings of Archille Gorky, Cady Wells and other artists who experienced themselves as "outsiders." Shoenfeld's father was a journalist and painter and one of his paintings is the inspiration for Jane's poem "Father's Family Tree." "Petals in the Tunnel" Shoenfeld's book of her paintings and poetry will be available for purchase. There will be time at the end of the reading for questions and interactions with attendees.
