Fabu Phillis Carter is an educator, artist and community activist who has an extensive career, designing innovative programs to benefit African American children, families, and elders in Madison.
A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison with two masters; Afro-American Literature and another in African Languages and Literature, Dr. Fabu Carter has a PhD from The African Women Studies Centre, University of Nairobi, Kenya.
Selected as the first African American Madison Poet Laureate (2008–2012), she is professionally known as Poet Fabu. She is a culture columnist for the Cap Times and Capital City Hues newspapers.
This year she was awarded the Jeffrey Erlanger Award for civil public discourse. She is a poet, storyteller and teaching artist who writes to encourage, inspire, and remind. Fabu's work has been published locally in Wisconsin and internationally in Kenya. She is the author of eight books of poetry. Her latest book is “We Eat to Remember: Soul Food Poetry.” She is currently working on a new manuscript, “We Are Wisconsin” which celebrates all Wisconsin people.
On the 4th Tuesday of every month, Richard Vargas will bring in a guest poet to read their poetry to the crowd, but will allow other poets to read a piece or two of their own work (5 minute slots) throughout the 2 hour session.
Come join us for some literary uplifting while you hoist a few pints.
