Poetry Evening with Liz Berry & Martha Kapos
Ikon hosts an evening of poetry readings by two of Mali Morris’ favourite poets, Liz Berry and Martha Kapos.
The event is introduced by Mali Morris and is organised to coincide with Calling; Morris’ solo exhibition at Ikon Gallery (20 September – 22 December 2023).
About the artist:
Mali Morris was born in North Wales in 1945, studied Fine Art at the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne and Reading, and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2010. Her first solo exhibition was held at Ikon Gallery, John Bright Street, in 1979. Since then, she has exhibited widely and internationally, with more than forty solo exhibitions in Europe, America and Japan, most recently at Hales New York in 2022. Morris has a studio at A.P.T, Creekside, London; she previously taught in many art schools in UK and overseas, and from 1991 – 2005 was Senior Lecturer 0.5 in Painting, Chelsea College of Art.
About the poets:
Liz Berry is an award-winning poet and author of the collections Black Country (Chatto, 2014); The Republic of Motherhood (Chatto 2018); The Dereliction (Hercules, 2021), a collaboration with artist Tom Hicks; and most recently The Home Child (Chatto, 2023), a novel in verse. Berry’s poems, rooted in the landscape and language of her native Black Country, have received multiple awards.
Martha Kapos was born in the US and came to London as an art student in the 1960s. Her professional life has brought together writing and the visual arts – she taught at the Chelsea College of Art in London until 2001 when she joined the editorial team at Poetry London. Kapos’ first collection of poems My Nights in Cupid’s Palace (2003) was a Jerwood/Aldeburgh Prize winner and both this and her two subsequent collections from Enitharmon, Supreme Being (2008) and The Likeness (2014) were Poetry Book Society recommendations.
