Zeny Giles (Zenovia Doratis) was born in Sydney in1937. Her father came from Cyprus, her mother from the Dodecanese island of Castellorizo. Her latest book, Castellorizo to Woolloomooloo deals with the arrival of her mother’s family to Sydney in 1924.
Her eight year old mother and eleven year old uncle were enrolled in Plunkett Street Primary, a school which has had a most interesting history and honours John Hubert Plunkett, an inspired Attorney General who brought in a judgement of guilty against the white settlers who killed
Wirrayayaraay people in 1938.
Zeny has lived in Newcastle for most of her life. In 1981 she won The Age Short Story Competition and her collection of short stories Miracle of the Waters was published by Penguin in 1989. Her celebration of Newcastle Caught in the Light (2002) contained the first of her poems to be published. She had read an early version of the poem, My Father's Hands at PATP when it met in Beaumont Street. She has continued to find PATP a stimulus to her poetry and has published several collections with Koel Koel Press.
For many years Zeny has been an active member of Catchfire Press, a local cooperative which has featured the stories and poems of Hunter Valley writers.
