JAMAAR SMILEY: www.thesmileyexperience.com

Jamaar Smiley, also known as the "Voice of the Northwest", is a Spoken Word Artist, Poet, Author and Educator. His work captures the essence of proud black men and women, youth and adult alike, by diving deep into the people, the history, the upbringing, the communities, the Ancestors, and the culture itself.

Born on the South Side of Chicago and grew up in Burien, Washington, he began writing at a young age to express and gain a better understanding of himself. While attending Midland University in Nebraska, that understanding would come full circle.

<blockquote>“My work as an artist encompasses the struggle of Black Americans and the ongoing injustices that leave us in a constant state of traumatic stress. Deterring us from our health, sanity and prosperity as not only a collective of people, but as humans.</blockquote><blockquote>Having endured the expropriation of our original culture, heritage, spiritual customs and land, my art serves as a medium to garner healing from these traumas so we as a people can progress in the way nature intended in the efforts that one day we can live up to the moniker 'People of the Sun.'"</blockquote>

His art, often described as the love child of Saul Williams and Nikki Giovani, has reached cities and institutions nationwide. He has shared the stage with many influencers of this generation from International Award-winning Artists like the Canadian Song bird, Gina Williams, to Community Organizer and Humanitarian Rizza Islam.
