About this Event
Bringing together writing and live performance, Poetic Place Open Mic & Workshops are electric events where local people take to the stage to share original poetry shaped by personal experience and place. These performances offer a space to speak openly about identity, community and change.
With a warm, participatory atmosphere, poets perform to a live audience, who are invited to react, reflect and respond.
How the event works
This event is suitable for people at different levels, from beginners to pro poets. We’ll start with a workshop to create new poetry around a chosen theme, followed by an open mic segment to allow people to express through spoken word. We’ll finish with a ‘slam’ where a panel poets can give you feedback on your creative writing and get competitive with your words!
Whether you’re stepping up to the mic or coming to listen, you’ll be part of a fun shared experience that celebrates creativity and connection. Leave feeling inspired, moved and maybe even ready to give it a try yourself!
We especially welcome young people and residents from across Havering, including those from marginalised communities, to join in and have their voices heard.
Selected poems may be featured in public displays across the borough in 2026.
