What is a pocket forest?
A pocket forest is a densely planted community of native trees and plants in an area smaller than the size of a few parking spots. These pocket forests tend to grow faster, sequester more carbon, and promote more biodiversity than conventionally planted urban trees.
Thanks to a large group of community volunteers, the King Street Parkette was prepared in June by laying down cardboard, spreading compost and mulch. These materials were left to settle, creating a nutrient-rich site for 600 trees and shrubs to be planted on October 25, 2025.
This pocket forest project is a collaboration between The Rotary Club of Uxbridge and The Township of Uxbridge. We are grateful for the generous in-kind donation of compost from The Region of Durham, and mulch from UTS Tree Care. This project was made possible by the financial support of LCBO, Tree Canada, and The Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority.
